Prepare Now: The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Is Here
As the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season kicks off, a developing system in the Gulf of Mexico, soon to be named Tropical Storm Alberto, has led to a tropical storm watch for the Texas coast. This marks the first alert of the season, as the National Hurricane Center issued an advisory for potential Tropical Cyclone One on Monday afternoon.
Heavy rain, potentially leading to significant flooding, is forecasted for the western Gulf Coast, with up to 15 inches of rainfall possible. According to National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan, the threat of flooding will intensify into Tuesday morning.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for the Texas coast from Port O'Connor to the mouth of the Rio Grande. This means tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area within the next 48 hours.
"We're expecting heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding along the Gulf Coast over the next several days," Brennan stated on Monday. "This flooding threat will persist throughout the week."
As of 11 p.m. EST Monday, the system's maximum sustained winds were near 40 mph with higher gusts. The National Hurricane Center described the system as "quite large," with tropical storm-force winds extending up to 290 miles to the northeast of the center.
The system is expected to become a tropical storm by Wednesday, and residents along the western and northwestern Gulf coasts are advised to monitor it closely.
By late Monday night, the system was moving north at about 7 mph, with a west-northwest turn anticipated by Tuesday night or Wednesday. The system is likely to approach the western Gulf coast by late Wednesday, according to a late Monday advisory from the hurricane center. This system is one of two tropical systems expected to strengthen this week, potentially impacting parts of the southern U.S.
NOAA Director Rick Spinrad recently predicted an "extraordinary" hurricane season, with an 85% chance of above-average activity. With potentially more named storms than usual, the importance of preparedness cannot be overstated.

Even if it doesn't reach full tropical storm status, significant rainfall is expected to impact Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana into the middle of the week. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dan Pydynowski noted that a surge of tropical moisture could lead to heavy rains in these regions.

Heavy Rainfall: Up to 15 inches of rain could lead to flash flooding in Texas coastal counties, including Houston.
Wind Gusts: Strong gusty winds are expected, potentially impacting areas from Florida to South Carolina.
An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system, which is expected to bring numerous showers and heavy storms to the southeastern U.S. later this week.
